Send the Love this Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching it’s difficult to walk into a grocery store or shopping mall without being bombarded with red heart shaped balloons and cute messages from Hallmark. Other messages urge us to buy chocolates, flowers, or those little heart candies we all loved getting in elementary school. But perhaps this Valentine’s Day we can send our love to those who have never before received a message of hope and caring. This year consider donating the dollars you would have spent on chocolates, flowers, or those little heart candies. To give you an idea of what those amounts could do in DRC:

$5 pack of candy hearts could instead provide 12 days of lunches at Salisa Bana School for a student

$20 box of chocolates can buy two chickens for a continuous source nutrition

$50 beautiful bouquet of roses could provide milk or formula, food, a home, and a loving caregiver for a month for an orphaned child at Kaziba Orphanage

$500 diamond earrings can purchase a year’s worth of school supplies for 6 young students to give them the tools they need to work for a better future

$1,000 matching bracelet to go with those earrings could save the lives of 5 children on the brink of starvation through our Feed Congo Kids program

If you choose to send those dollars to the children of the Democratic Republic of Congo in honor of a loved one, OFA will send you a certificate of thanks to display where those flowers would have been. Let’s face it, as we all try to hang on to our New Year’s Resolutions, this is a much less calorie filled gift.

Help OFA to Send the Love this Valentine’s Day and consider providing a brighter future for the children of DRC. If you would like to support any of our programs or to find out more about OFA, please visit our website HERE or check us out on Facebook.

For those of you in the Portland area, we are hosting our upcoming Send the Love event on Saturday, February 18th at Cellar 503 and would love to see you out there. The event will be from 6:00-8:00pm. It will be a relaxed evening of wine tasting and socializing with a small chat about OFA’s plans for the future. Tickets are just $30 and can be purchased on our donation page HERE by selecting “Send the Love” under Fund. It’s going to be a great time and we would love to see you out there. If you have any questions about the event email us at dsmith@ourfamilyinafrica.org or 360-609-8081.

The Well at Salisa Bana is Finally Complete!

We received word from Deacon Jim last night that the well project at Salisa Bana School was completed this week. This means that fresh, clean water will be provided to the 237 students who attend there as well as for the community surrounding the school. We want to take this opportunity to express our extreme gratitude to all of our donors who helped to make this a reality. Truly, the hope that OFA brings to kids in the DRC would not be possible without the love that you continually show them.

Clean, safe water is something that I personally take for granted every day when I turn on a tap in my home. But for people in the poorest country in the world, a water source that is both not far in distance and does not potentially fill you with parasites, is a miraculous step forward. Clean water is an absolute necessity for creating a stronger, healthier society.

However, there is still serious need at Salisa Bana. Some of you may have been following recent events in DRC which have created a very tumultuous and uncertain atmosphere due to the political climate. Because of this uncertainty food prices have started to increase dramatically. We need your help to continue to provide one meal a day to these 237 students, many of whom rely on that as their only reliable meal each day. Hunger and attempting to educate oneself are definitely not things that mix well. Please consider donating to Salisa Bana and help to us to continue to make progress in educating the future leaders of the DRC.

If you are interested in donating to Salisa Bana or OFA’s other programs, please visit our Donate Page HERE.

Thank you all again for the support that you have shown OFA over the years and for helping us to bring this well project to completion. If you have any questions about OFA or our operations, please reach out to us at dsmith@ourfamilyinafrica.org or 360-609-8081.

Best regards,
